The past few years have seen market turmoil for the forest products industry across New England, but much of the bad news may be behind us.  Pulp and paper mills in Maine are making significant investments, housing starts are climbing steadily, and lumber prices are nearing record levels.
New England has the forests and the wood supply infrastructure to produce a range of products – from historic markets like lumber and paper to emerging products such as biofuels and cross laminated timber.   Entrepreneurs and developers have been visiting the region to understand and evaluate opportunities, and there has never been a better time in the region to develop new markets that use large volumes of low-grade wood, particularly softwood.
This FRA Maine Forestry Forum meeting will provide  a look at where markets have been the past few years, the underlying factors driving change, and discuss how our region’s advantages – wood, people, iron and proximity to market – can be harnessed to support existing and emerging forest product manufacturing.
