Forestry Field Day Set for Sept. 7

     The 65th annual Forestry Field Day, a co-production of Maine Woodland Owners and Maine Tree Farm, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the woodlot of the 2019 Outstanding Tree Farmer – Don Newell and his family.  The event will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. at 328 Ward Hill in Unity; the 250-acre woodlot extends from Unity across the town line into Thorndike.

Among the highlights:
  •  Explore the stewardship practices of the hosts;
  •  Learn about possible financial assistance with forest conservation projects;
  •  Participate in a “Forests for Maine Birds” workshop;
  •  Introduce your pre-K to 8th grade children to forest flora and fauna through Project Learning Tree activities;
  •  Join the hosts for music and refreshments after the event.  Further program details will be included in the August Maine Woodlands, with the complete program featured in September.
     The Newell tree farm has been the site for a Maine Woodland Owners workshop in 2016, with the Society of American Foresters’ Maine chapter cosponsoring.  Newell was also featured in a member profile in the September 2013 issue, where he explained his management approach.  While most of the tree farm’s acreage had been cut too heavily to allow any large-scale harvests, he still likes to experiment with different techniques, finding that nature is forgiving: “Even if you make a mistake, there are plenty more trees to work with,” he said.
