Research is showing that climate change is impacting Maine’s forests and that forests play a role addressing carbon in our atmosphere.

Maine Climate Action Plan

In 2019, Governor Mills signed multiple bills into law that require a reduction in carbon and encourage renewal energy efforts. In 2020 the Governor established the Maine Climate Council to develop strategies to both reduce Maine’s greenhouse gas emissions and to ensure Maine's people, economy, and communities are more resilient to the impacts of climate change. The result was the four year climate action plan Maine Won’t Wait.

Maine Woodland Owners was represented on the Natural and Working Lands Working Group. One of the recommendations from the group was to establish a Task Force to investigate the creation of a forest carbon program. Governor Mills signed an Executive Order to establish this group and Executive Director Tom Doak was appointed to the task force.

The Task Force, co-chaired by DACF Commissioner Beal and Tom Abello, Legislative Director for Governor Mills, consists of thirteen members appointed by the Governor. Task Force recommendations are required to be submitted to the Governor on or before September 1, 2021. Click HERE to read more about the task force and its focus.
