Determining the Legacy of a Forest is a Big Decision.
Since 1990 Maine Woodland Owners land trust has been working with landowners to ensure that their property is always protected from development and is managed consistent with their philosophy of good stewardship. We work diligently to find solutions and provide assurance that a treasured woodlot will be productive and well managed indefinitely. Find out how.
We are a land trust for working forests. Our program is unique when compared to other land trust organizations. We only accept lands and conservation easements where active forest management is allowed. All of our properties have forest management plans and are certified and managed sustainably by an internationally recognized third-party system. We enroll all of our properties in Maine’s current land use program including Tree Growth or Open Space Tax programs and pay our fair share of property taxes. We believe in continuing to support local communities where we own land.
Gifts of land benefits land donors, communities, and woodland owners. Often, when property owners donate their land to our organization they realize real estate and income tax advantages that make good financial sense (find more information on the Land Trust Alliance website). Additionally, donated forests ensure that communities continue to enjoy forested landscapes, wildlife habitat, and clean water. And since all of our land trust lands are open to the public we encourage recreational use and offer learning experiences to promote sound, long-term management principles. Further, sustainable forestry supports Maine people, the wood products industry, and Maine’s rural economy.
