Help Us Steward Our Lands

Maine Woodland Owners is seeking volunteer woodland stewards to monitor our many properties across the state and continue the high standards of stewardship practiced by our donors.

Anagnos-Gustafson Forest, Poland and New Gloucester. Donated in 2020.

Stewards are assigned parcel(s) to monitor at least annually. Things to look for will include:

  • visibility of boundary lines

  • condition of the forest

  • condition of roads and trails, including water crossings

  • evidence of trespassing or violation of terms of access (unauthorized motor vehicles, construction of tree stands, etc.)

  • presence of trash

Once selected to be a woodland steward, you’ll receive training to be the organization’s eyes and ears on the ground. Stewards will report any issues on their assigned property to Maine Woodland Owners for follow-up action.

Woodland stewards serve the important role of being the reporter of issues of concern to the organization and are not expected to take enforcement or corrective action.  Maine Woodland Owners’ staff is responsible for following-up on any issues you identify during your monitoring.

Initial terms for woodland stewards are for one year and can be renewed.
