Mission & History
MISSION
Maine Woodland Owners supports woodland ownership and stewardship through education, advocacy, collaboration and conservation for the benefit of landowners, wildlife, the environment, the public, and the economy.
HISTORY
Maine Woodland Owners was established in 1975 to assist and support small woodland owners with management of their land. Much of what began 50 years ago continues today as an organization that promotes the stewardship of Maine’s small woodland resources. As we have broadened our mission to anyone who has an interest in Maine’s woodlands, our goals continue to be the same -- to strengthen long-term woodland ownership, to improve forest quality and health, to protect waters and wildlife habitats, to demonstrate forest management through our land trust and to encourage outdoor recreation.
Maine Woodland Owners accomplishes its mission by advocating for and reaching out to Maine’s small woodland owners. We represent small woodland owners in the State Legislature by fighting against unnecessary regulations and for constructive forest policies. We hold over 50 educational workshops annually through our chapters across the state. Our monthly 20-page newsletter, Maine Woodlands, is an important resource for the latest news and activities.
