Clifford Woods

Back to Upper Kennebec Valley Region

Location: Farmington

Year Acquired: 2002

Acreage: 55

Donor: Gordon Clifford

Description: This 55 acre woodland was donated by Gordon Clifford in 2002. Like most woods found in Central and Southern Maine this is former farmland. Old fences and stone walls from its agricultural history comprise boundaries and cross the property.  Additionally, Hardy Brook bisects the property with steep banks on either side. This “forested oasis” provides multiple opportunities for members of the community to enjoy outdoor recreation and is a short distance from other natural areas and trails.

Clifford Woods contains unique geological features caused by glacial action and erosion such as irregular rock outcroppings, gorges, cliffs and gullies. Most of these interest points can be seen from the property’s trails.

This property is part of a network of working forest parcels that are held and managed by Maine Woodland Owners. All land will remain undeveloped, open to the public, and sustainably managed. Our Land Trust addresses a growing need to conserve working forests in Maine by accepting donations of land and conservation easements where active management is allowed. We follow best practices on all of our properties to ensure the health and productively of our woods.
