How You Can Contribute to Forest Preservation

Maine is home to the United States’ biggest unfragmented temperate broadleaf and mixed forest, which means it’s especially important for all citizens to play their part in preserving the land. Although small woodland ownership might not be for everyone, there are practical steps anyone can take toward protecting the forest.

3 Ways to Encourage Forest Preservation

Here are a few very practical and relatively easy ways to protect the forest and the beautiful life it holds:

  • Educate yourself. Education is one of the most powerful tools in any area of life. The more you educate yourself about the way nature works, the current status of Maine’s forests, and the efforts in place to protect plant life, the better equipped you will be to help with preservation.

  • Get involved. After educating yourself on where things stand, commit a few hours each week or month to becoming involved with the Maine Forest Service. There are plenty of opportunities to make a difference, such as the Volunteer Fire Assistance Program, forest ranger training, and more. Organizations like this one also appreciate donations.

  • Leave no trace. Campers often use the mantra of “leave things better than you found them.” Follow this idea every time you enter the woods, and you’ll be a natural part of the preservation efforts in Maine.
